Space Adventures launches Spacewalk
SPACE Adventures, the space experiences company, has announced that orbital spaceflight clients can now participate in a spacewalk during their stay aboard the International Space Station (ISS). Also known as an extra-vehicular activity (EVA), those clients interested in the spacewalk option have the availability to spend up to 1.5 hours outside of the space station. The current duration of a Space Adventures’ orbital spaceflight mission is 10 days. Past orbital clients have paid $20 million for their spaceflight which includes six months of cosmonaut training. The addition of a spacewalk would lengthen the mission approximately six to eight days and the price for this option is $15 million. Space Adventures has previously sent three private explorers to space.
Sharjah airport traffic up 37pc
SHARJAH International Airport has reported a 37.26 per cent jump in passenger traffic reaching 1,423,007 passengers in the first half of 2006 compared to 1,036,709 passengers in the first half of 2005. The aircraft movement witnessed a 10.56 per cent increase from 18,755 flights in the first half of 2005 to 20,735 flights in the first half of 2006, according to a media report. According to figures, the airport has experienced a 16.17 per cent increase in cargo operations.
ADAC names designer for complex
ABU Dhabi Airports Company (ADAC) has selected the French Aeroport de Paris, Ingenierie to undertake design and supervision services for the new Air Traffic Control Complex (ATTC) at Abu Dhabi International Airport. It will be positioned midway between the two runways and will be equipped with state-of-the-art navigational and meteorological equipment to ensure the safe and timely arrival of aircraft at the new Midfield Terminal Complex. When it goes operational by April 2008, the tower will enable the Airport to handle up to 70 takeoffs and landings per hour. The ATCC project is estimated at Dh402 million, part of a Dh30 billion redevelopment programme to transform the capital’s airport into an ultramodern gateway. Work has already begun on a second runway and an interim terminal for Etihad’s exclusive use is to begin shortly.
Dubai airport traffic up 6.24pc
THE Dubai Civil Aviation has announced that the passenger movement at Dubai International Airport (DIA) increased 6.24 per cent to 13.75 million in the first half of 2006 over the same period last year. The DCA also reported a 10 per cent increase in cargo volume, according to a media report. About 110 airlines currently serve DIA, flying to more than 160 regional and international destinations. DIA handled a total of 13,759,320 passengers in the first half this year against 11,837,271 during the same period last year. January and April witnessed the highest passenger movement this year with a comparative growth of 17.12 per cent and 21.48 per cent respectively over the corresponding period in 2005.
