In a significant expansion of its newly launched global network, Riyadh Air has announced it will commence direct flights between Riyadh and Madrid starting July 17, 2026. Operating three times a week aboard its flagship Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft, the new service marks a strategic step forward in enhancing air connectivity between Saudi Arabia and Spain.
The route launch aligns with a massive transformation in the Spanish capital, which has repositioned itself to capture high-end international leisure and business segments.
"From Spain, we're delighted to welcome Riyadh Air's new service to Madrid," Carlos Ruiz González, Director of Spain’s Tourist Office for GCC countries tells TTN readers.
"Madrid has really come into its own as a luxury destination, with the opening or renovation of five-star luxury hotels in the last few years - such as the Four Seasons, Ritz-Mandarin Oriental, and Rosewood Villamagna - and many more great brands already established or opening in the near future."
González noted that the city's hospitality boom is mirrored by world-class retail developments, making it a natural fit for premium travellers from Saudi Arabia. High-net-worth individuals from the GCC can access premium shopping districts like the Salamanca district, upscale complexes like Galería Canalejas, premier department stores such as El Corte Inglés, and luxury retail destinations like Las Rozas Village (part of the Bicester Collection).
Beyond retail and premium stays, corporate ties and sports tourism are expected to fuel the route. González noted that the direct connection will cleanly cater to football enthusiasts drawn to Madrid’s iconic clubs, as well as businesses looking to capitalize on simplified transit protocols between both commercial ecosystems.
Rather than acting simply as a terminal stop, tourism officials predict the Riyadh Air flight will reinforce Madrid’s position as a launchpad for broader destination immersion across inland Spain. "We expect this new connection to meaningfully grow passenger traffic from Saudi Arabia and reinforce Madrid's appeal as a premier destination for leisure and business alike, and as the starting point of some unique leisure trips to other amazing destinations," González explained.
Several UNESCO World Heritage cities sit less than 1.5 hours from the capital by train or car, making high-yield day trips highly accessible to a variety of destinations.
For Saudi travellers planning trips during the peak summer window, the tourism office specifically highlights the mountain-adjacent municipalities north-west of the capital such as San Lorenzo del Escorial, Segovia, and Avila - where the high-altitude climate remains notably cooler than the central metropolitan grid.
Furthermore, eco-tourism and outdoor activities are being brought to the forefront for GCC travellers seeking nature.
Located just a few kilometres north of the urban centre, the Sierra de Guadarrama National Park offers mountain landscapes and wilderness trails reachable within a 30-to-45-minute drive from Madrid. The addition of Madrid marks Riyadh Air's latest long-haul expansion phase following its highly publicised inaugural commercial operations earlier this summer.
It gives travel trade professionals an influential new premium product to market to families and executive clients across the Gulf network.
