Meliá Hotels International is set to bring its flagship luxury brand to the GCC with the upcoming launch of J1 Hotel, a Gran Meliá Hotel. Situated at the tip of the peninsula in Port de La Mer along Jumeirah 1, the beachfront property is targeting a Q4 2027 opening, anchoring itself within Dubai’s redeveloped coastline alongside the bustling J1 Beach culinary strip.
The debut introduces Spain’s largest hotel group’s highest-tier luxury brand to the UAE market. While Meliá operates roughly 400 hotels globally, the brand remains relatively underrepresented across the Gulf - a footprint the group plans to expand rapidly through flagship openings in the UAE and three upcoming properties under construction in Saudi Arabia.
Pedro Neto, General Manager of Gran Meliá J1, tells TTN’s Kim Thomson that the property will offer an unhurried, understated approach to luxury.
“We understand that Meliá is still a bit of an unknown brand in this city and the wider GCC, but that will change over the next couple of years,” Neto says. “We want to showcase our style of genuine hospitality - making sure guests have everything they need without superfluous fuss. Nowadays, I truly believe that less is more in hospitality. Service should be intuitive and present, but never intrusive.”
Currently under construction, the 366-key hotel will feature 80 suites, including 31 accommodations complete with private plunge pools.
Set against the Arabian Gulf with unobstructed skyline vistas, the peninsula setting ensures privacy with no neighbouring construction sites.
Dining is positioned as a primary demand driver. The property is designed to be a self-contained dining destination, housing heavyweight culinary concepts including Zuma Beachhouse, Jul’s, and Novikov.
Neto identifies regional domestic travellers and the GCC as the hotel's core source market for luxury staycations, complemented by high-spending CIS and Russian inbound segments. Meliá also plans to leverage its global loyalty network to capture established European and South American clienteles, while gradually growing North American luxury business.
Meliá’s luxury expansion includes a comprehensive renovation of Meliá Zanzibar to elevate it into a Gran Meliá property by early 2027.
This complements Gran Meliá Arusha and two boutique Meliá Collection safari lodges in the Serengeti, providing regional travellers with direct five-hour safari connections from the Gulf.
Neto stressed that distribution partnerships remain vital to building the brand's luxury footprint. “The travel trade will play an essential role in our bookings,” says Neto. “We cannot do this alone. Our goal is to work alongside our travel agent and media partners to communicate what we are building here.”
