Rewriting the river playbook
Achim Weber

From fairytale European Christmas markets to an ambitious ultra-luxury debut on India’s sacred waters, Scenic Group is expanding horizons for Middle East river cruisers.

River cruising is experiencing a pronounced shift in consumer perception across the Middle East, moving from a niche European novelty into a high-demand, high-yield luxury segment.

Leading that charge is Scenic Group, whose dual portfolio - ultra-luxury brand Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours and contemporary deluxe sister line Emerald Cruises - is presenting regional travellers with a compelling spectrum of waterway journeys.

Speaking to TTN, Achim Weber, Head of Sales DACH, Middle East & Africa at Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours and Emerald Cruises, laid out a dynamic operational roadmap headlined by a bold repositioning move from Myanmar to India’s Hooghly River, alongside high-demand European festive winter itineraries.

Repositioning to India

In one of the most intriguing long-haul deployment developments discussed at Arabian Travel Market, Scenic Group confirmed plans to launch a dedicated luxury river expedition programme on India’s Hooghly River, slated to welcome its first guests in September 2027.

To facilitate the ambitious expansion, the operator took decisive operational steps to extract one of its five-star river vessels previously stationed on Myanmar’s Irrawaddy River. The ship is currently undergoing a comprehensive bow-to-stern refit to align with the brand’s exacting standards before making its inaugural sailing on the sacred waterway.

“The Hooghly River represents an extraordinary canvas for luxury river exploration,” Weber explains.

“We are creating a unique, culturally immersive product that offers intimate access to historic riverbank settlements, artisan villages, and architectural landmarks along the lower Ganges basin - all wrapped in our signature ultra-luxury hospitality.”

With its rich cultural heritage, colonial architecture, and spiritual significance, the Hooghly itinerary, will be followed by expansion onto India’s Brahmaputra River as part of a commitment to have two Scenic river ships operating in India by 2029–30.

European Christmas markets

On the European front, Weber highlights the surging appetite for the group's classic Christmas market sailings along the Rhine and Danube rivers, positioning them as an effortless antidote to traditional land-based winter touring.

For travellers wishing to experience Europe’s festive season, land travel often involves complex logistics - navigating frosty roads, managing multiple train timetables, and dealing with the persistent hassle of packing and repacking luggage between hotels. River cruising flips that narrative entirely.

“Our Christmas market cruises offer a seamless, floating boutique hotel experience,” Weber notes. “Our ships moor directly in city centres - often just steps away from historic town squares, festive cathedral plazas, and centuries-old artisan stalls. Guests step off the ship right into the holiday lights, enjoy the traditional atmosphere, and return onboard without the stress of winter travel.”

The seasonal narrative continues onboard, where culinary teams curate authentic winter menus featuring regional staples like spiced glühwein, traditional lebkuchen, and localised seasonal entertainment, allowing guests to savour the local festive culture from panoramic lounges and heated private balconies.

Central to Scenic Group’s message to regional travel advisors is the distinct brand positioning between its two cruise lines, ensuring travel planners can precisely match client preferences.

Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours operates on an ultra-luxury, truly all-inclusive philosophy. Every detail - from private butler service for every suite, top-shelf dining, and premium beverages to personalised shoreside excursions (Scenic Freechoice) and private cultural events (Scenic Enrich) - is included upfront. With generous space-to-guest ratios and an intimate yacht-like ambiance, it caters directly to affluent GCC travellers seeking five-star ease.

Emerald Cruises delivers contemporary, deluxe river cruising characterised by sleek, modern design, innovative public areas (such as indoor heated pools that transform into evening cinemas), and active wellness programmes like guided cycling tours. Offering exceptional value with flexibility, Emerald appeals to a younger demographic, couples, and independent travellers wanting high design with customisable inclusions.

Whether it is the festive warmth of a winter sailing on the Danube or the historic allure of our upcoming launch on the Hooghly River, river cruising delivers an intimate perspective that large ocean ships cannot match

To drive awareness and commercial growth across the region, Scenic Group continues to deepen its on-the-ground trade engagements through partnerships with Dubai-based GSA CruiseXplore.

With booking trends indicating that regional clients are increasingly looking for destination-deep travel that combines comfort, culture, and privacy, Weber expressed strong confidence in the region’s expanding appetite for boutique river expeditions.

“Whether it is the festive warmth of a winter sailing on the Danube or the historic allure of our upcoming launch on the Hooghly River, river cruising delivers an intimate perspective that large ocean ships cannot match,” Weber says. “We are working hand-in-hand with regional travel partners to showcase how these journeys translate into high-yield, unforgettable client experiences.”
