ALSO calling the travel and tourism industry to “double its efforts to become more responsible, regardless of the economic situation”, is Fiona Jeffery, chairman of World Travel Market (WTM).
“It would be catastrophic if we do not face up to perhaps one of the greatest challenges this industry has ever known,” she said, speaking as WTM World Responsible Tourism Day (WRTD) held in association with the UNWTO, entered its third year.
She found that this special day had received a good response from small specialist companies but destinations and multi-national companies were dragging their feet, and stressed that the WRTD was vital to the longer term outlook for the industry. In 2008 150 businesses participated, and she hopes the figure will be substantially increased this year.
“We need to show consumers that we are listening to their demands,” said Jeffery. WRTD is to be held on Wednesday November 11. Visit the website www.wtmwrtd.co.uk or telephone +44 (0) 1892 535943.
