TWO years after becoming the first hotel in Bahrain to receive ISO-IMS certification in three management systems at the same time, Al Safir Hotel and Tower has hit another milestone with the launch of a comprehensive responsible business activities package.

The company’s responsible business ethos states that this means taking responsibility for the health and safety of employees and customers, showing responsibility for social and ethical issues in the company and in the local and global communities and reducing the property’s negative impact on the natural environment.

Among the activities already in place are the use of energy-saving light bulbs, providing non-smoking rooms and smoke-free areas and a campaign to make Al Safir a plastic-free environment with the aim of reducing the use of plastic by 25 per cent by the end of 2011.

The hotel is also getting involved with charity initiatives and in support of this,  in association with the kingdom’s central blood bank, Al Safir recently organised a blood donation camp with 86 employees and 13 guest donors taking part.

Tapan Ghimire, quality control manager, who initiated the event, said: “It is such a great pleasure to have this unbelievable response for voluntary participation in a noble cause like blood donation which saves lives. Many more responsible business activities are coming up in the near future including a free health check up camp in November and other environmental and conservation-related activities.”

For the future Al Safir has ambitious plans such as the use of environmentally-friendly guest soaps and shampoos with refillable pump dispensers to be installed in bathrooms, installation of water saving devices wherever possible, use of timers for electronically operated equipment, collection of bottles and paper for recycling, segregation of bio degradable compost waste and the reduction of room temperature thermostats by one degree.
