THE number of Cyprus beaches achieving Blue Flag status rose again this year confirming the island’s commitment to stringent environmental regulations. The Blue Flag is an exclusive eco-label which has been awarded to more than 3,450 beaches and marinas in 41 countries across the world. The initiative was launched in 1987, during the European Year for the Environment, and is run by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE). It contributes towards sustainable development at beaches and marinas through strict criteria dealing with water quality, environment education and information, environmental management, safety and other services. Cyprus has recognised the importance of the campaign as a way in which tourism can be better integrated with the coastal environment. With the co-operation of the Cyprus Tourism Organisation and the Cyprus Marine Environment Protection Association, local authorities and government bodies, Cyprus introduced the European Blue Flag Campaign and become a full member of the FEE in 1995. In 1996, 11 beaches were awarded the Blue Flag and by last year that number had reached 54 with the total rising to 56 this year.
