Turkish Airlines half-year profit up 181pc to $180m

LATEST figures from Turkish Airlines (THY) show sales revenue has increased by 28 per cent in monetary terms, reaching €1.8 billion ($2.4 billion), while net profit for the first half of the year has increased by a staggering 181 per cent to €134 million ($180 million).

Operating profit reached €55 million ($74 million), a 34 per cent decrease compared to the same period in 2009, which is attributable to increasing fuel prices that led to a 74 per cent increase in fuel expenses for the airline.

The upward growth trend in traffic results continued during the first half-year with the number of passengers carried increasing by 19.3 per cent to 13.4 million. Cargo and mail carried increased by 49.6 per cent to 152 thousand tons.

A 19.9 per cent rise in available seat kilometers was accompanied by an increasing demand in revenue per kilometre, which rose by 26.8 per cent. The passenger load factor augmented by 4.1 points from the previous year, to 72.1 per cent.
