In May 2014, 65 per cent of the work on Phase 1 was complete. The construction of the MRO facility, the new terminal, and the automated people mover was ongoing, the fuel oil terminal was under planning and the bids for the construction contract of the aprons were under evaluation. The project’s construction related work was 75 per cent complete with the Passenger Complex Building’s ceiling being finalized. The dedicated rail line for the APM (automated people mover) that will transport passenger between the processing area and international hub was to be in place soon.
The scope of work of phase 1 is as follows: * Airfield facilities upgrade - Upgrade of runways and taxiways; renewal of airfield ground lighting (AGL) and related infrastructure; accommodation of Code F aircraft and upgrading of the airfield facilities for the Haj terminal. * Aprons - Construction of six aprons with a built-up area of 250,000 sq m *Automated people mover – Construction of a 1.5 km long automated people mover * Fuel oil terminal * New aircraft control tower – a 136 m tower. * General aviation terminal to cater for private jets and including Boeing 767 and 747s. * MRO facility - A 34,2995 sq m built-up area, which will include 11 aircraft maintenance hangars, 10 ancillary buildings and an administration building, aircraft parking aprons and a closed car park. * New terminal – A 700,000 sq m building with 46 departure gates, 94 aircraft bays, 96 airway bridges, commercial centres, a railway station zone, a 120-room hotel, 200 counters, IT infrastructure, duty free shops and car park space for 8,200 cars. * North & South terminals - Redesign and expansion of the North Terminal (dedicated to foreign airlines) and the South Terminal (dedicated to the national airlines) and installation of new equipment and improved facilities (check-in counters, baggage sorting system, reorganization of the passenger circuits). Landside and airside expansion will serve for the next five years, until the new terminal complex is ready. Companies and Project Personnel:
