Saudi’s inimitable summer escapes

Share

Saudi is redefining what a summer getaway can look like through the diversity of experiences it offers. What makes the destination especially compelling is not just the scale of what is being developed, but the contrast between its destinations. Within a single journey, travellers can move from entertainment hubs to quiet mountain retreats and then to untouched island coastlines, each offering a completely different rhythm of travel.

Far from a single-spot vacation, Saudi offers a mix of summer experiences, from family entertainment options near Riyadh and cooler mountain landscapes in Aseer to coastal luxury along The Red Sea. Together, these destinations create seamless multi-stop itineraries that blends thrill, culture, nature, and luxury.

Qiddiya City theme parks

Just outside Riyadh, Qiddiya City is a purpose built entertainment destination designed entirely around experiences. Within the wider Qiddiya City masterplan sit two flagship theme park attractions: Aquarabia and Six Flags Qiddiya City, bring together theme parks, sports venues, live performances, cultural attractions, and large scale entertainment districts within one integrated environment, positioning the destination as a major new hub for leisure and entertainment in Saudi. The latest addition to Qiddiya City is Aquarabia, the largest water theme park in the region. It complements Six Flags Qiddiya City, expanding the destination’s appeal with a dedicated water-based experience designed for long summer days.

Aquarabia brings together a wide range of attractions, from high-adrenaline slides and wave experiences to more relaxed water zones designed for floating, playing, and unwinding. The experience is designed to flow naturally, allowing visitors to move between energy and relaxation within the same environment.

Beyond traditional water rides, Aquarabia introduces a broader concept of active water entertainment, including rafting channels, kayaking experiences, surf pools, and immersive aquatic zones that encourage interaction rather than passive enjoyment. This makes it a destination where visitors are not just spectators, but participants.

Six Flags Qiddiya City includes five record-breakers such as Falcons Flight, the world's tallest, fastest, and longest roller coaster, plus dining at 27 international spots and 25 shopping outlets, blends high-thrill adventures with family-friendly experiences. It is built for exploring as much as riding, and visitors should plan a full day for the trip.

For summer visitors, this makes Qiddiya City an easy and compelling city break option, where the focus is not on one attraction but on an entire ecosystem of things to do, see, and experience.

The energy of Qiddiya lies in its breadth of its experiences. One moment visitors can be immersed in adrenaline-driven attractions, and the next they can explore live entertainment spaces, dining concepts, or interactive zones designed for all ages.

It is a place where time feels dynamic, shaped by movement and discovery.

Together, Six Flags Qiddiya City and Aquarabia form twin anchor attractions within Qiddiya City, creating a new kind of summer anchor for Riyadh, where entertainment is not an add-on but the main reason to travel.

Aseer: mountains,

mist and culture

While much of the Gulf experiences peak temperatures during the summer months, Aseer offers a refreshing alternative that feels almost unexpected in its contrast. With its cooler climate, mist-covered mountains, and deep cultural heritage, it stands out as one of Saudi’s most distinctive seasonal escapes.

Located in the southwest of Saudi, Aseer is defined by its elevation and natural diversity. Green valleys, terraced landscapes, and traditional stone villages create a setting that feels both dramatic and peaceful. Its mild climate has long made it a cherished retreat, and it is now becoming increasingly visible to regional and international travellers seeking nature-led escapes.

In spring, Aseer takes on a different character as the seasonal bloom of jacaranda trees transforms the region. Streets, parks, and hillsides are lined with vivid purple blossoms, creating one of the area’s most recognisable natural spectacles and drawing visitors during the shoulder season.

At the heart is Abha, which serves as the main gateway to Aseer. The city blends modern life with cultural identity, offering lively local markets, traditional cafés, and access to some of the most scenic landscapes in Saudi. From here, the journey unfolds naturally into the surrounding mountains.

Visitors can explore the Sarawat Mountains, where winding roads reveal panoramic viewpoints, deep valleys, and ever-changing light across the terrain. Cable car rides across striking escarpments offer a unique perspective of the landscape, where mountains and clouds often meet. Nearby Al Soudah adds another layer to the experience, with cooler temperatures and open natural spaces that invite long walks, outdoor activities, and quiet moments in nature.

Aseer’s cultural depth is equally compelling. One of its most iconic landmarks is the UNESCO World Heritage site, Rijal Almaa, a beautifully preserved heritage village known for its distinctive multi-storey stone architecture. Walking through its narrow pathways reveals layers of history, craftsmanship, and community life that have been carefully preserved over generations.

Across Aseer, daily life and tradition remain closely connected. From local handicrafts and traditional cuisine to seasonal customs and mountain festivals, the region offers an experience that feels authentic and grounded in place.

During the summer months, Aseer becomes especially vibrant. Festivals, cultural events, and outdoor gatherings bring energy to its natural calm, attracting families and younger travellers looking for something different from typical summer escapes. It is this balance between nature and culture that gives Aseer its unique character.

The Red Sea:

redefined coastal escape

On the opposite end of the spectrum, The Red Sea represents one of Saudi’s most ambitious tourism destinations and a cornerstone of its luxury travel offering. Stretching along a largely untouched coastline, it introduces an innovative approach to coastal tourism, where natural beauty is not only preserved but carefully integrated into every aspect of the experience.

Designed around principles of sustainability and regenerative tourism principles, with a strong emphasis on protecting coral reefs, coastal landscapes, and marine ecosystems. Development is intentionally low impact, supported by renewable energy and long-term environmental planning.

This ensures that the coastline remains pristine while still offering world-class hospitality experiences.

The result is a destination that feels untouched yet thoughtfully designed, where luxury is defined not by excess but by space, silence, and connection to nature.

Across The Red Sea, a growing collection of islands and coastal zones is coming to life, each offering a different interpretation of the landscape. Some focus on privacy and seclusion, while others introduce more active, design-led, or wellness-driven experiences. Together, they form a diverse coastal network connected by a shared philosophy of sustainability and refined simplicity.

Multiple destinations

What makes Saudi particularly compelling for summer travel is not only the strength of its individual destinations, but the way they can be seamlessly combined into a single journey.

Travellers can begin with a high-energy stay in Riyadh, anchored by Aquarabia and Six Flags Qiddiya, before moving to the cooler landscapes of Aseer for nature and cultural exploration. From there, the journey can continue to The Red Sea, where moments of relaxation and coastal beauty await.

This blend of entertainment, climate diversity, and coastal escape creates a travel experience defined by contrast and discovery, where each destination offers a different rhythm, atmosphere, and sense of place.

Accessibility, readiness

Saudi’s tourism infrastructure continues to evolve in line with its ambitions. Expanded air connectivity, improved road networks and new gateways such as Red Sea International Airport are enhancing access across key destinations.

Visa processes have also been simplified, making it easier than ever for international travellers to plan visits. At the same time, continued investment in hospitality is expanding the range of accommodation options across luxury, lifestyle, and family segments.

Importantly, many of these developments are transitioning from vision to reality, bringing new destinations and experiences to market, and making them increasingly accessible to travellers.

Looking ahead

As Saudi continues to expand its tourism offering, summer 2026 marks an important milestone in its evolution. With attractions such as Aquarabia coming online, Aseer strengthening its position as a summer escape, and Shura Island continuing to take shape as part of The Red Sea destination, Saudi is building a tourism landscape defined by depth, diversity, and scale.

Saudi today offers a connected collection of destinations that cater to a wide range of traveller preferences, from high energy entertainment and cultural discovery to mountain retreats and ultra-luxury coastal escapes.

It is a summer defined not by choosing one destination over another, but by the freedom to experience them all within one journey.
