Bangkok by way of Banyan Tree

Share
Vertigo offers a bird’s eye view of the Thai capital

Across a sparkling skyline, I scan the horizon, which is way, way down below me, 61 floors to be precise. The 360-degree view from Banyan Tree Bangkok’s aptly named Moon Bar is all glittering and glowing. Starting at the bar for a beverage, the sundowner of choice is the signature virgin Vertigo Sunset, a melody of pineapple, cranberry and lime juice. Sipping slowly, it is time to watch the world go by.

Then as the clock strikes six we breeze over to the Vertigo restaurant for a mouth-watering three-course meal. You’ll want to draw out your time here too because the views really are spectacular – plus the restaurant only closes at 11pm. That is as long as the tropical temperament of Thailand remains pleasantly perfect. Regardless the al-fresco dinning with a difference is a must-do in the city, namely for the views but for the food too.

Get ready for a day out and about under the rain shower or in the freestanding tub, which has spectacular views out to the city too. The Banyan Tree has 10 spectacular types of rooms on offer from the deluxe rooms, which vary based on bed size through to the club room, one and two bedroom suites, a spa suite and the all-impressive presidential suite. But wherever you lay your luggage in the hotel, be sure to finish your morning ritual with a buffet breakfast at the hotel’s restaurant Romsai, which is naturally the next step to prep for a day of shopping and sightseeing. Thailand is home to many a markets, tranquil, temples, the golden Buddha, palatial parks and monumental museums, so be sure to carry the camera wherever you go.

Then, thanks to the Banyan Tree’s central location, make a beeline for the shopping districts, think Siam Paragon, Central Chidlom, Asiatique and the Chatuchak Weekend Market. These are easily accessible by rail, bus and taxi. The Banyan Tree also has its own boutique, which stocks the cutest souvenirs, including hotel branded towels, robes, and stylish toiletry bags. But whichever day or night you’re in the city, there’s always a district that is buzzing with bargains, which will without a doubt leave your hankering for a hot meal.

Hungry? Pop back to the hotel for a gastronomic tour. Start with lunch at Bai Tun a traditional Cantonese place to chow. Or perhaps Taihei is more you’re scene with a taste of teppanyaki, miso soup and sashimi. Then there’s afternoon tea at the Lobby Lounge. Relax for the afternoon by the stunning roof top pool, perched on a ledge, which juts out from the side of the hotel. Adjacent is the award-winning spa. It’s a sanctuary tucked away from the bustling business district below and a definite must-try. Just be sure to book, this relaxation hub can get busy.

As you arrive for your treatment, meander your way through the glowing bamboo jungle that sits pretty just before the spa’s reception. Once inside sip on ginger tea and get ready to be pampered. We recommend one of the signature treatments including the Royal Banyan, which uses herbal pouches during a massage combining east and west techniques. Otherwise there’s the Thai Beauty Ritual for Him and Her, which is a traditional Thai blend of spices and massage movements. Then while away the afternoon with a sauna or steam session. This spa really does know how to ensure complete rest and relaxation.

To finish off your stay in Bangkok, a cruise down the Chao Phraya River is a must. See the sights by sea, while dining on deliciously fresh Thai cuisine. We were met by Thai dancers, who passionately performed a traditional dance, as we boarded the Chaophraya Cruises boat, in its two-storey glory. The Banyan Tree offers a similar experience on-board the Apsara.

Overall Bangkok by way of the Banyan Tree offers an experience that regardless of your purpose of visit – a holiday, business trip or even medical appointment – will conjure up a love for the city.
