In 2009, the resort teamed up with Al Boom, the team responsible for running the on-site dive center to create an artificial coral reef. The project included the placement of 18 reef structures and reef balls approximately 500 m off the resort’s shore line. Reef balls are hollow, molded blocks of concrete that provide shelter for plants and coral to grow. This coral then attracts fish and other marine life such as whale sharks and stingrays.
The Le Méridien Al Aqah is Fujairah’s landmark property, located on a 230m stretch of unspoilt golden beach, nestled between the Hajar Mountains and the Indian Ocean. The hotel is currently undergoing a renovation programme which will see the Views restaurant receive a complete revamp as well as the beaches protected from the ocean waves. At Views, a state-of-the-art interactive kitchen is being built in keeping with the hotel’s philosophy of ‘freshly cooked’, allowing guests to view the chefs in action.
Committed to protecting the ocean, the hotel is also constructing wave barriers away from the shore as well as a landscaped retention wall on the beach to lessen the impact of waves on the shore and prevent beach erosion.
