The beach area

AS THE Golden Tulip Resort Dibba, Oman, prepares to unveil the results of its renovation, general manager DUCO DE VRIES spoke to SHALU CHANDRAN about what’s been happening.

How much of the hotel has completed renovation, which areas have been covered and how much has been invested?
The upgrading and enhancements have been administered in phases and are due for completion by September 2010. Our immediate action is focused on our ocean-front grounds, presently undergoing a complete ‘metamorphosis’ into a great new outdoor resortexperience!

Simultaneously our spacious sea-view rooms are undergoing a soft refurbishment with traditional décor and atmospheric lighting. The investment has been Dh2.5 million ($680,624).

What new facilities will be available onsite?
We are delighted to announce the opening of a new beachside bar. This will be the ultimate gathering point for sun worshipers and sundowners alike serving mouth-watering smoothies and exotic cocktails accompanied by light, healthy snacks while guests chill to music and enjoy the inspiring scenery.

Our pristine beach will be complemented by a stylish sun-lounger deck overlooking the Gulf of Oman, with lush planters and palm trees providing shaded areas.

In addition we are launching a professional recreation centre operated by Absolute Adventure offering a wide range of activities for all ages. We have also tied up with Al Boom Diving and snorkelling and diving enthusiasts can now explore the fascinating marine life in the close vicinity and book excursions instantly at our lobby-based office.

Our beach, pool and communal areas will feature contemporary sun-loungers and terraces providing flexible spaces for outdoor dining, relaxation and events. With designated barbecue areas, sheesha service and striking new outdoor lighting we are creating a romantic atmosphere for couples as well as great amenities for families.

On the family front we will also be introducing a newly-designed outdoor fenced playground.

What business facilities do you have?
Our business facilities include free wireless internet in the lobby lounge and a business centre with secretarial services at a nominal charge.

High-speed Wi-Fi internet access is being installed into every guest room.

The resort’s serene setting in nature makes it a truly unique Mice destination and meetings are seamlessly hosted in our elegantly-appointed conference room which can accommodate up to 100 guests.

Exclusive privileges and benefits can also be accessed through Golden Tulip Group’s commercial value drivers such as Ambassador Club, Connections and Let’s Meet Again.

Are there any further plans or initiatives you’d like to implement at the property?
We are presently establishing our ‘hotel green programme’ dedicated to reducing our impact on the environment by following eco-friendly practices.

In the long term we are looking into expansion with several ocean-front private chalets with multiple bedrooms and fully-equipped kitchens.

How have the past year and the first part of 2010 been for the hotel? Who are your main source markets?
In the first quarter we have been performing fairly well in comparison to last year. Our main feeder market remains Dubai and we have found that the east coast, in particular the Musandam Peninsula, has established itself as a preferred destination which attracts GCC residents and visitors from around the world.

What are your expectations for the summer months/Ramadan?
We predict even higher visitor interest to take advantage of our attractive summer packages which include snorkelling excursions or scuba diving trips to beat the summer heat. Offerings during Ramadan and Eid Al Adha will be announced in due course.
