Jordan sees increase in Arab tourism

MAHA KHATIB, Minister of Tourism and Antiquities for the Kingdom of Jordan, says they are currently working on an intensive campaign in the GCC countries, with a particular focus on attracting more families.
While no specific destination has been singled out, “because all destinations in Jordan would suit families, we are going more towards ecotourism and adventure tourism options, as these appeal to children,” said Khatib.
The moderate Mediterranean weather, the choice of destinations available within the Kingdom, the close proximity to Middle Eastern guests and the fact that it is a safe destination are also highlighted.
“We have of course, suffered due to the downturn, this year a drop in Europeans and Americans of about 15 per cent but we have had an increase in Arab tourism, which is excellent,” she said.
“We continue to encourage visitors from Europe, but we are particularly encouraging Arabs because historically we have taken Arabs for granted, which is not right and it’s a big market,” she said.
Arab travellers were attracted to Jordan for many reasons, including its offerings in the education and health sector – Jordan hosts many fine universities and colleges and “we are well known in the region for having excellent medical services,” she added.
Saudi Arabian guests top the list in this regard during summer. According to Jordan Tourism Board (JTB) figures, more than 112,000 foreign patients were admitted into Jordanian hospitals and clinics between 1999 and 2003. More than 5.8 million people were reported to have visited Jordan last year.
Khatib said that of particular interest to visitors from the region would be the Jordan Festival 2009, an annual event which used to be held only in Jerash but now covers the entire country. For five weeks from July 7 to August 8 thousands of people converge to witness a wide selection of world class cultural performances in singing, dancing, ballet, opera, exhibitions and more.
The JTB is also promoting the flourishing meeting, incentives, conferences and exhibition sector.
