January festival brings in 50,000


THE annual Awafi Festival in Ras Al Khaimah (RAK) is expected to bring in half a million domestic and international visitors, according to a statement from festival organisers.

Media reports quoted Sheikh Faisal bin Saqr Al Qasimi, chairman of RAK Finance Department and head of the Festival Organising Committee, as saying the Awafi Festival has already become a major event in the tourism calendar of RAK, attracting huge number of visitors from UAE and GCC countries. He was speaking at a press conference before the event, which ran from January 12 to 28.
“Taking into consideration the growing popularity of Awafi as a family getaway, especially during the mid year school vacation, the Government of Ras Al Khaimah has decided to promote the festival as one of the major attractions in the emirate's tourist calendar,” he said.
Over the years the festival, has developed as a popular spring festival which celebrates the emirate’s ethnic and cultural traditions through performances, heritage shows and outdoor sport events centered at the picturesque Awafi area, noted for its cool environs and sandy terrain.
Attractions usually include car races, motorcycle shows, football tournaments, horse races, puppet shows, chess tournaments, helicopter rides, theatre performances, magic shows, bullfights and much more.
