THE Sheraton Dubai Creek Hotel & Towers transformed its over 2,000 sq m hotel lobby into a fitness centre on July 25 for a charity day to raise funds for a UNICEF project for the street children of Egypt.

As part of Starwood Hotels & Resorts’ EAME divisional fundraising campaign entitled Road to Awareness Bike Ride 2009, the hotel presented its version of the race by hosting a day of ‘racing’ activities on its upper lobby floor.

Themed Cycle for Life, the hotel inspired its corporate clients, suppliers, partners and the public to help raise funds by taking part in fitness related competitions. Activities included competing on cycling equipment, sushi making and chocolate carving.

From September 4 to 6 a group of cyclists from Starwood’s senior management from the EAME divisional office will be riding 360 km in the French Pyrenees for the 2009 Road to Awareness Bike Ride campaign, which aims to raise at least $150,000 in support of the same UNICEF project, which provides social, medical and psycho-social support to 2,000 street children in greater Cairo.

The campaign was initiated by Guido de Wilde, vice president and regional director of operations for Starwood Hotels & Resorts in the Middle East last year, raising nearly Euro 250,000 ($356,000) for a child-to-child radio project in Mozambique.
