Bahrain joins global panel

Bahrain has been selected to a global committee that will study the impact of the September 11 attacks in the US on world tourism.

The World Tourism Organisation selected Bahrain along with 13 other countries to its crisis management committee.

More than 120 countries are members in the organisation. Egypt and Jordan are the only other two countries from the Middle East selected to the committee.

Information Ministry Assistant Under-Secretary for Tourism Affairs Dr Kadhem Rajab will represent Bahrain in the committee.

Dr Rajab said the committee would assist governments in rebuilding a positive tourism image, particularly for countries in the most sensitive regions like the Middle East, North Africa and South Asia.

"It will also measure the impact of last month's events in the US on tourism, and strengthen the organisation in the areas of safety and security," he told an international marketing forum.

"The committee's first meeting will be held on November 11 in London during the World Travel Market."

The World Tourism Organisation qualified Bahrain to become a full member of during its last general assembly held in Seoul, South Korea.

Consequently, Bahrain was elected as vice-chairman of its Middle East regional committee, said Dr Rajab.
