LARNACA Regional Tourism Body has announced the start of tours in the city and region of Larnaca using two open-top double-decker buses.

The first bus named the Love Bus will run five one-hour tours per day, from morning till evening, taking in various points of interest within the city of Larnaca including the old aqueduct of Kamares, the Hala Soultan Mosque in Tekke, the ancient harbour of Kition and the medieval castle.

The second bus, known as the Red Bus, will operate tours of approximately three hours in various communities in and around Larnaca including agro-touristic villages including Skarinou, Tochni, Agios Theodoros and points of interest such as the neolithic settlement of Choirokitia and the church of Aggeloktisti in Kiti.

An additional full-day excursion will take in the traditional village of Lefkara.

The aim of introducing the bus tours is to offer foreign as well as local tourists interesting excursions to the most appealing points of interest in the city and region using an interesting, alternative means of transport.

It is hoped the trips will help visitors get to know the traditional villages of the region – which have in the past few years greatly developed their agrotourism product – and also get acquainted with the rich history and culture of the Larnaca region.

The tourism sector in Cyprus has marked a sound recovery despite the global economic downturn. According statistical data, foreign tourist numbers to Cyprus showed a remarkable surge of 15 per cent in March 2010 over the same month of 2009, or more than 103,000 to last year’s 90,000.
