Travellers who book through an agent or a website connected to the Sabre global distribution system are now able to get SMS text messages on their mobile phones if their flights are delayed, or if their departure terminals are changed at short notice.

The facility is available through the Sabre Virtually There website, www.virutallythere.com, and the online itinerary and travel-shopping tool is automatically available to the customers of Sabre Connected travel agents.

Travellers who enter their individual six-digit Passenger Name Record (PNR) code on the site can see a wide range of details relating to their air, car and hotel bookings, and can make additional travel-related purchases.

The UK-based Mobile Data Association Ltd reports that the number of SMS text messages sent in Britain exceeded one billion in August - almost double the volume of last year.
