The ski resort of St Moritz is preparing for its 144th winter season, which will mark the 60th and 80th anniversaries of Olympic Winter Games in Switzerland.
The forthcoming winter sports season begins on November 24, with the opening of the runs on Corvatsch. A week later, on December 1, the mountain railways and lifts of Diavolezza and Corviglia welcoming their first guests of the season.
St Moritz is the only place in Switzerland to have hosted Olympic Games, in 1928 and 1948, and various sites bear witness to them such as the Olympic Stadium and the ski jump.
Some 150 traditional St. Moritz winter events then follow in quick and concentrated succession up to Easter (March 23), including two further jubilees in January and March – the 50th Anniversary of the Concours Hippique on Snow and 40th Anniversary of the Engadin Cross-Country Skiing Marathon.
After a total renovation lasting a year and a half, the Carlton Hotel reopens in December as the Alps’ first deluxe all-suite hotel. Over CHF60 million ($51.2 million) were invested in the renovation. Badrutt’s Palace Hotel will be opening for its winter season with an entirely new east wing.
Other top events of the season include the Swiss World Bobsleigh Championships from January 1 to 6; White Turf horse racing on select dates in February; the 15th St Moritz Gourmet Festival from January 28 to Februayr 2; and the 11th Snow and Symphony Music Festival from March 21 to 30.
