January 2005 11

THE Alliance to Save Energy honoured Marriott as a ‘star of energy efficiency’ on December 9.

The honour was for its leadership in the hospitality industry in enterprise-wide energy management.
Alliance to Save Energy is a coalition of prominent business, government, environmental, and consumer leaders promoting efficient and clean use of energy worldwide to benefit consumers, the environment, economy and national security.
Marriott is the first and only hospitality company to receive the Alliance’s top award. The Star of Energy Efficiency honour is a result of a top-level commitment, a partnership with Energy Star, and training for all hotel engineers in the Marriott Energy Conservation Programme.
The JW Marriott Dubai takes numerous energy conservation measures as part of the Marriott Environmentally Conscious Hospitality Operations (ECHO) programme that is practiced throughout the property. Improving digital controls, reducing heating and cooling loads, building envelopes, improving heating and water systems, chilled systems are just some of the measures the property has taken in its quest to become more energy efficient.
Led by senior vice-president Pat Maher and project director John LaHaise, the lodging engineering team has helped ensure that more than 90 per ent of Marriott hotels have undergone a variety of energy efficiency improvements, including lighting replacements which conserve energy usage by more than 30 percent, electronic thermostats, new brand signs with LED technology, and central plant upgrades and re-commissioning.
