DSF 2003

DFC to ease access to Global Village
January 2003 29

Dubai Festival City (DFC), a key Sponsor of Dubai Shopping Festival 2003, will introduce a range of measures to ease access to Global Village 2003, one of DSF's major attractions, hosted permanently at Dubai Festival City.

The event, hosted on the banks of Dubai Creek, will this year see upgraded infrastructure including at least three main road entrances, more parking spaces, shuttle transport within the parking lots, and a dedicated public transport co-ordination system.

Last year, of the total 2.3 million visitors, over 1.8 million people arrived at the Global Village by car, 420,000 came on foot and 68,000 used Dubai Municipality's buses. Dubai Festival City officials estimate that over 2.68 million people will visit the Global Village in 2003, exceeding the 2002 daily average of 75,000.

With the change in the dates for the DSF 2003 and with Eid Al Adha in February and a two-week school holiday in mid-January, traffic volumes to Global Village 2003 are expected to rise significantly.

Zoned Global Village parking lots will accommodate 13,000 vehicles daily, a 30 per cent increase on last year. Taxi and bus shuttles to the main gate will be available from the parking zones.

There will be a dedicated closed circuit lane to cater to large families and the elderly, as well as a VIP designated area near to the venue, which will hold 1,400 vehicles. In addition, there are provisions for a helipad near the Creek to be used in emergencies.

Traffic signals at the dedicated entrance gate off Al Rebat Road will be demobilised for the month and will be manned by Dubai Police.

Two other main entry and exit gates will also be introduced further along Al Rebat Road.
