A paradise of sun, sea, mountains and lakes, Turkey is pushing ahead with its campaign to get a bigger slice of the world tourism cake.

Turkey's Ministry of Tourism which last year launched a worldwide 'Embracing Diversity' promotion aimed at increasing the country's tourism revenue to more than $9 billion, plans to further capitalise on its unique position as an international crossroads.

The country attracts more than 10 million visitors a year.

According to studies by the International Society for Tourism, Turkey is expected to receive more than 17 million visitors by 2010 and 27 million tourists by 2020.

Due to its immense wealth of tourism attractions, the government has consistently given priority to the development of this sector as a vital source of economic growth since 1982.

Total local and state investments on tourist infrastructure has been high with the country now boasting six international airports, nearly 3,000 resorts including several built around its rich treasure trove of mineral springs and spas.

From April to October, Turkey offers the vacationer an ideal climate that is perfect for relaxing on sandy beaches or enjoying the tranquility of mountains and lakes.

Turkey also has a magnificent past, and is a land full of historic treasures from 13 successive civilisations spanning 10,000 years. And tourists can see a lot of this great past even if they just spend a short time in the country.

Turkey's charms ensure it gets repeat visitors from across the world. Turkey is a country of diverse scenery, climate, and historical monuments, so travellers can sometimes be overwhelmed by the choice of places to visit.

The Turkish Tourist Information Office is an active promoter of tourism in the Gulf through its offices in the region.

It assists Gulf tourists by providing information on tourism in the country and helps organise tours around Turkey's various attractions.
