Sustainable practices at Hyatt Capital Gate Abu Dhabi

AS THE Hyatt Capital Gate Abu Dhabi prepares for its grand opening in the last quarter of 2011, various sustainable initiatives are underway to support Hyatt’s objective of environmental responsibility.

The building (pictured) has been constructed using a double glass façade, contributing to a five per cent reduction in heat and, therefore, lower energy bills.

The special glass, which is being used in the UAE for the first time, comprises anti-glare elements in two silver coatings, minimising the intense summer glare and eliminating the requirement for blinds in the building. Furthermore, the building design – with an internal atrium – has significantly reduced the requirement for concrete in the construction of the property.

The Hyatt Capital Gate is the latest milestone is the merging of the Adnec Grandstand, a historic 30-year-old city landmark, with the contemporary avant-garde façade of Capital Gate.

The unification is achieved through a canopy that arches over the grandstand like a wave, before transforming into the ‘splash’ which climbs the east face of the building to create a suspended lounge and restaurant with swimming pool and relaxation area for Hyatt Capital Gate.

The concept of this unique meshed structure was inspired by Abu Dhabi’s landscape and its fluid natural rhythms of wind and water. In addition to its ambient design, the splash is one of many energy saving features of Capital Gate, offering a 30 per cent reduction in heat, providing shade and maintaining 80-per-cent transparency.

Added to the commitment to energy conservation and responsible practices, Hyatt has invested in the ISO 14001 certification. The hotel is owned and developed by Abu Dhabi National Exhibitions Company (Adnec), Capital Gate is 160 m (524 ft) tall and leans westward at 18 degrees – four times as far as the Leaning Tower of Pisa and further than any other tower in the world.

The Hyatt Capital Gate will occupy floors 18 to 33 of Capital Gate offering 189 rooms. Due to the unique contour of the tower, each room in the hotel will have a different shape and orientation and the hotel’s ‘sky lobby’ will be suspended 80 m above the ground on the 18th floor.
